The occurrences and happenings at Shalbourne Soaring Society. A gliding club near Andover, Newbury and Hungerford.

Saturday 11th June

Classic looking day but not many members around to start the day. Pete Smith took the first launch setting off on a mission to take advantage of the liberated Lyneham airspace, returning 4 hours later mission accomplished. Meanwhile back at the ranch (er, airfield) mixed fortunes with modest launches in the cross wind meant some got away whilst others returned. Some terrific climbs (10 up reported, 6 on the averager was the best I saw) and some height eating sink. Nigel and I took JMX to 5,400'.
Few more members appeared in the afternoon - in time to watch the rain approaching, narrowly missed us but killing the lift.

  1. Actually Pete was not the only one to take advantage of the liberated Lyneham airspace. We had a visit from an Astir from Nympsfield on a Silver Distance mission. The route is a lot easier will not having to go the long way around Swindon. Well done to the pilot, and hopefully we'll see more such visits.

The afternoon rain didn't kill the lift completely. Graham managed to find some and to prove it was still possible to get double figure flight times he did it again on the last flight of the day while we watched Shalbourne village get the benefit of a heafty shower.

  2. And the pilot from Nympsfield was no the only one to get a silver leg - congratulations to Steve Gaze on a Silver Height with a climb of 3800ft.
